150 Last-Minute Memorial Day Getaways

Memorial Day is a day to remember U.S. military personnel who died while serving our country. The holiday is celebrated each year on the last Monday in May, which follows the weekend informally known as “early summer.”

We believe this holiday weekend should be spent honoring our nation’s heroes and paying tribute to the lives lost in service. 

In addition to paying respects to lost loved ones, you can also spend your Memorial Day celebrating the arrival of summer.

We’ve found three last-minute getaways in every state, so you can celebrate no matter where you are. These places are great for history buffs, nature lovers, and everyone in between.

Admission to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial is $6 for children under 11, $18 for adults and $15 for seniors over the age of 55. Veterans will have to pay an admission fee of $15, while active military personnel will get admission for free.

If you’re eager to kick off summer, take a trip to Point Mallard Park for some fun in the sun  .

Located in Decatur, Point Mallard Park is the perfect place to spend the day biking, swimming, or camping. The park also features a water park, golf course, bike trail, ice complex, and more.

Tickets to Point Mallard Water Park cost $28 for children aged 12 and above. Senior citizens and children aged 11 and below can enter for $23.

Fort Gaines is one of Alabama’s Memorial Day attractions. 

Located on Dauphin Island,   Historic Fort Gaines   is “one of the key sites in the famous Battle of Mobile Bay.” Explore the site and see gun mounts, cannons, and barracks dating from the War of 1812.

Alaska

 Spend  a day of your vacation   at the Anchorage Market .

The free event, held at the Diamond Center Mall in Anchorage, features more than 100 vendors selling art, jewelry, local honey and clothing.

This museum in Fairbanks is one of America’s first vintage car museums. It displays over 100 classic vehicles from the 18th, 19th and mid-20th centuries, as well as thousands of fashion items.

Admission to the museum is $12 for children ages 6 to 12 and $15 for children age 13 and up.

Arizona

Start your Memorial Day weekend    at Lake Havasu State Park in Arizona.

Located in Lake Havasu City, this park is a beautiful place to start the summer with sunbathing on the beach, trail hiking, and camping. The park has boat ramps, campsites, beach cabins, picnic areas, and hiking trails for you and your family to enjoy.

The park entrance fee is $20 per vehicle on weekends and holidays. The entrance fee for individuals or bikers is $3.

 Honor fallen military aviators by visiting the Commemorative Air Force Museum  in Mesa  .

The Commemorative Air Force Museum aims to educate visitors about the contributions of military aviators to the country’s freedom. For $15 or less per person, you and your family members can explore the museum and appreciate the museum’s operations hangar and exhibits of bomber and cargo aircraft. Tombstone is a small town in Arizona, affectionately   known as  “ the town too hard to die in .”

A visit to Tombstone is a great way to spend your long weekend. This Old West attraction welcomes tourists with stagecoach shootouts, stagecoach tours, and charming saloons.

Arkansas

Start your Memorial Day weekend  at the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View.

The park celebrates traditional Ozark music, crafts, and culture by offering visitors “the opportunity to watch artisans at work, stroll through the Heritage Herb Garden, and hear live Southern mountain music.”

This museum is located in Fayetteville and displays military aircraft, aviation artifacts, and memorabilia from decades of wars. The hangar at the Arkansas Air & Military Museum was once home to World War II training posts for U.S. troops.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 16, and free for children under 6. Admission is $9 for veterans and active military personnel.

Animal lovers and kids  will love a holiday weekend trip to the Little Rock Zoo.

The zoo is just one of Arkansas’ many treasures, home to more than 200 species of animals. Start the summer off with a visit to the Little Rock Zoo’s reptile house, tropical bird exhibit and safari market. Then, end the day with a ride on the park’s antique carousel. California

  Head to Santa Monica for the annual   MAINopoly: A Taste of Main Street event.

Colorado

 Plan a weekend getaway to Aurora for the Colorado Remembers Memorial Day tribute .

The celebration will include a parade, carnival, car show, bake-off and the annual pepperoni roll eating contest. 

Come hungry to the bake-off event; spectators will sample the entries and choose this year’s winner. Stay for the festival’s closing fireworks show at the Fairmont.
